After the defeat of Jie of Xia the Shang Dynasty is now my place. The Shang dynasty spanned over 600 years and had 31 emperors from 1600 to 1066 BC. At the start of this Dynasty Yi Yin played an important role, especially once Tang died.

Yi Yin advised and counseled 3 emperors, Waibing, Zhngren and Taijia. Around 1541 BC Tang’s grandson started neglecting state affairs, instead choosing to drink and concentrate on his concubines. Yi Yin placed him under house arrest for 3 years until he realized that he was letting down his ancestors and decided to change his ways. Taijia reformed his ways and once again took control of power and became a wise king.Although other accounts states that Yi Yin tried to take the throne by placing Taijia underhouse arrest.

During the Shang they started using animal bones as oracle bones to predict the future. They also worshipped many gods and ancestors, believing that their ancestors also turned into gods after they died. There was a supreme god named shangdi and he ruled over the other gods. However as the shang continued they started worshipping a more natural force named tian, which can be translated as heaven. This natural forced rule all the other gods and rule the earth.

]]>

The Mandate of Heaven was introduce in the Shang dynasty. Meaning that the emperor could rule unopposed unless there were numerous natural disasters or the sovereign has lost concern or touch with his people. When this happens the people believed that emperor had lost the mandate of heaven and it was acceptable to rebel and overthrow the emperor.

This mandate gave legitimization in the following dynasties in the eyes of the people. The Shang dynasty moved its capital 6 times the last time to the city of Yin; starting a golden area and also nick naming the Shang dynasty, the Yin dynasty. Although the Yin dynasty could refer to the late Shang dynasty,

The end of the Shang dynasty was around 1066 with their power declining and western zhou kingdom’s powers increasing. Again the emperor of Shang at the time was a tyrant named Zhou.

+He build a deer terrace hundreds of meters high with a circumference of a few miles wide.

+ He made a bronze pillar and took amusement in watching people baked to death by the pillar.

+He uncle gave him some advice he disapproved of, so he was killed and his heart was cut out.

+ He minister also gave some advice and the emperor skinned him and made his skin into paper for a warning to others.

At the battle of Muye in 1044 Emperor Wu of Zhou had a victory against the Shang dynasty and the emperor Zhou. Emperor Wu only had an army of 70,000 but emperor Zhao had a 700,000 strong army. However where Emperor Wu’ s army was well trained, well fed, fit and strong; Emperor Zhao army was comprised mostly of slaves and didn’t want to die for an Emperor that they didn’t care for.

The battle was short with Emperor Zhao’s army fleeing. Seeing his army fleeing emperor Zhou of Shang went to the top of his place and set himself aflame, killing himself in a inferno.

Ending the Shang dynasty.

To the west of Shang was a place named Zhou. The head of this state was named Jichang, under the management of Jichang; Zhou’s power grew while the Shang dynasty power declined. In 1066 BC Jichang son Jifa, launched a war on the Shang dynasty and ended the Shang dynasty thus founding the Zhou dynasty and changing his name to Emperor Wu.

Emperor Wu used the Mandated of Heaven, which was created in the Shang dynasty to legitimize his rule. The system that the Zhou Dynasty used to govern was a feudal based one. Emperor Wu distributed the land among vassal lords and created vassal states. These vassal lords were people who made a serious contribution to the war effort.

The vassal lords would then redistribute the land to officials, retainers and scholars who maintained the lands with the use of slaves and peasants. Even though the vassal states had to pay tributes and had an agreement to donated there military arms when called by the emperor; they were in affect kings in there own right. They had control of their financial and military affairs.

]]>

The western Zhou Dynasty was from 1046 – 771 BC and spanned 285 yeas however the Zhou dynasty is the longest dynasty throughout Chinese history.

The fall of the Western Zhou dynasty is because of a serious of bad leaders and a woman. The 12th Emperor, Emperor Li did not care for his people, he brought all the lakes are river under imperial control and forbade people from living or working on them. This caused a panic and started an attack on the imperial place from its own people.

After Emperor Li died Emperor You was continued the decline of the Zhou dynasty. However the worst moment of his rule was because of a concubine named Baosi.Emperor You was fixated on Baosi and wanted to please her because she would never smile.

One day Emperor You thought of a clever and funny idea, he bought Baosi to the top of his place then told him officers to light the beacons. These beacons were signals to the vassal states that the emperor demanded their military presents because of war. Within days many armies arrived at the placed but were confused and baffled by no present of any enemy.

Baosi laughed and laughed as thousands of men were humiliated. Emperor You would repeatedly do this to amuse Baosi. Emperor You also decided to get rid of his current wife and their son and make Baosi queen and their son crowned prince.

However Queen shen’s Father Marquis shen joined forces with the Quanroung, a northern ethnic group up north. United these 2 forces attacked Emperor You’s place; when Emperor You order the beacons to be lit no armies came to support their emperor. Emperor You died in the attack and his son, ping became emperor.

This was end of the western Zhou dynasty as Emperor Ping moved the capital east to Luoyi. The next period of this dynasty is called the East Zhou dynasty however historian also split this dynasty up into future sub-sections of the spring and autumn period and the warring states period.

If you were in the China of Deng Xiaoping in 1978 on your Chinese visa, you would have seen a nation bogged down with the ills of socialism, an erosion of the work ethic and anti-market propaganda. China responded with economic reforms such as the decentralization of agriculture, accepting foreign investment and permitting private entrepreneurship. You should have been in China now as winds of change were sweeping over it, on your China visa.

In the 1980s and 90s, economic reforms involved privatizing and sub-contracting most of state-owned industry and lifting price controls and narrow protectionist policies, leading to an annual 9.5% growth rate. China was no longer a poor nation, ridden by corruption and burdensome population. In fact, its economy was second to the United States. Whoever came here on their Chinese visas then could have seen this country on the move!
Reasons for success of reforms:

- Leaders experimented with ways of stimulating the economy by decentralizing state powers
- Local governments reduced barriers and regulations in order to boost economic growth
- Its export-oriented growth strategy
- The fall of the Soviet Bloc energized China to improve its economy.

]]>

By dividing agricultural land into small plots, production increased and farmers could keep their earnings from land after paying the state a fixed share. If you were here on your China visa, you would have been disheartened to see that with economic prosperity came corruption and inflation, leading to the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

China was now devoid of any red tapism that hampered economic prosperity with the setting up of economic zones to stimulate the economy. You should have been in Shanghai in 1992 on your Chinese visa to see the reopening of the Shanghai Stock Exchange after four decades.

If on the one hand private enterprise grew, on the other, state sector became loss-making. Finally, after three decades of China’s reforms, its GDP grew at 9.5% a year and its per capita income at 6.6% annually. In the 1990s, China also became a member of the World Trade Organization which helped liberalize the service sector. The changes were visible for all to see—even you, if you were here using your China visa.

If you are an importer on a China visa, you would love to trade with China as it grew in exports because it waived the paying of VAT for exports and undervalued its currency. Of course, this is possible only if you have a Chinese visa. To fuel its growth, China wanted to import natural resources, so it increased its investments in Africa, an oil producing country (about 85% of Africa’s exports). Besides oil, you could have seen imports like copper, diamonds, consumer goods, processed foods and timber from Africa come into China—all on your China visa.

Chinese economy produces .9 trillion (2010) every year, third after the U.S. and the EU, and growing at 10% per annum for the past 30 years. Anyone entering this country on their Chinese visa would have loved to be part of this booming economy.

If you were here after May 2011 on your China visa, you would have seen how important China is to the US economy—what with owning .16 trillion in the U.S. in the form of treasury bills, notes and bonds, aggregating to 26% of the publicly-held .5 trillion!

China is a wonderful holiday destination, so use your China visa now.
